Why Fragrance-Free, VOC-Free Products Are Non-Negotiable in Sleep Rooms
Sleep rooms are the most chemically sensitive area of any childcare facility. Infants and toddlers spend one to three hours per session lying at close proximity to cleaned surfaces — a cot mattress, sleep mat, or floor — and breathing the air in a typically enclosed, low-ventilation room. The respiratory exposure risk from cleaning product residue and airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a sleep room is substantially higher than in any other childcare area. A product that would pose acceptable risk in a playroom — where children move and ventilation is better — poses a direct respiratory health risk in a sleep room.
Direct Respiratory Exposure During Sleep
An infant sleeping in a cot or on a sleep mat breathes at a distance of 10–30cm from the cleaned surface for the entire sleep period. Any VOC off-gassing from a recently cleaned surface is inhaled directly at elevated concentrations relative to a standing adult. This is why fragrance-free, VOC-free formulations are the only acceptable product choice for any surface in a childcare sleep room.
Fragrances as Airway Irritants
Fragrance compounds — including those found in many "natural" or "lemon-scented" cleaning products — are among the most common airway irritants and allergen triggers for children under 5. A sleep room that smells strongly of cleaning product after a clean is a room where children will be breathing fragrance compounds and their derivative VOCs throughout the entire sleep session. Golden Star's sleep room products are deliberately odourless after application.
GECA Certification for Sleep Rooms
GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) certification specifically excludes products containing harmful VOCs, fragrance compounds that act as allergens, and chemicals with inhalation risk profiles. It is the product safety standard aligned with NQS Quality Area 2 requirements and the one most relevant to sleep rooms, where inhalation is the primary risk pathway rather than skin contact or ingestion.
What's Included in Our Sleep & Rest Room Cleaning Service
Golden Star's sleep and rest room cleaning covers every surface and item in the room using fragrance-free, VOC-free, GECA-certified products throughout. Every clean is documented in a signed compliance log for NQS Quality Area 2 and Quality Area 3 assessment evidence.
Cot Frame Sanitisation
All cot frame rails, base supports, and hardware wiped down with GECA-certified, fragrance-free sanitiser after every sleep session. Every rail a child's hand, mouth, or face contacts during sleep is treated. Any cot with cracked, damaged, or missing hardware reported for immediate removal from service.
Sleep Mat & Mattress Surface Cleaning
Sleep mat and cot mattress outer surfaces wiped with fragrance-free, GECA-certified sanitiser after every sleep session. Products that are safe in residue contact with infant skin and safe for inhalation at close proximity. Mattress covers and linen laundered between children and at minimum weekly — protocol detailed in the bedding section below.
Floor Cleaning
Hard floors vacuumed and mopped with fragrance-free, VOC-free floor cleaner. Carpet areas vacuumed. No strongly fragranced floor products used at any concentration in the sleep room. Under-cot and under-mat floor areas cleaned as part of the standard protocol.
Ventilation Check & Maintenance
Air vent covers inspected and wiped down. Ventilation adequacy checked — a sleep room with reduced airflow concentrates any residual chemical fumes from cleaning products. Ventilation issues reported to centre management. Ceiling fan blades wiped as part of weekly deep clean.
High-Touch Surfaces
Door handles, light switches, and any wall-mounted equipment in the sleep room disinfected after every session. Fragrance-free, GECA-certified disinfectant used throughout. Window sills and ledges wiped.
Signed Compliance Log — Every Visit
Signed, itemised cleaning log after every sleep room clean — recording surfaces cleaned, GECA-certified products used, time, and staff details. Formatted for NQS Quality Area 2 and 3 ACECQA assessment evidence. Retained 12+ months on file.

How Cots and Bedding Should Be Cleaned in Childcare
NHMRC Childcare Cleaning Guidelines specify separate protocols for cot frames and bedding that reflect the different hygiene risks and cleaning methods appropriate for each. Cot frames require surface sanitisation with GECA-certified products. Bedding requires laundering at temperatures sufficient for pathogen inactivation. Both protocols must be completed and documented for NQS Quality Area 2 compliance.
Cot Frame & Sleep Mat Cleaning
- All cot rails wiped — top, inner, and outer surfaces
- Base frame and support structures wiped down
- All cot hardware — bolts, knobs, teething rails — cleaned
- Cot mattress surface wiped — both sides where accessible
- Sleep mat upper and lower surfaces wiped
- Fragrance-free, VOC-free GECA-certified sanitiser only
- Air-dry before next sleep session — no residual smell
- Damaged or cracked cots reported and removed from service
Bedding & Linen Laundering
- Each child must have a dedicated, labelled set of bedding
- Bedding laundered between every child who uses it
- Minimum weekly laundering regardless of single-child use
- Machine wash at minimum 60°C — NHMRC-required temperature
- Fragrance-free, child-safe laundry detergent only
- Fully tumble-dried — no residual moisture in fill or seams
- Mattress covers and pillow protectors laundered between children
- Soiled or visibly damaged linen removed and replaced immediately
Fragrance-Free, VOC-Free Products for Sleep Room Cleaning
Every product used in Golden Star sleep room cleaning is GECA-certified, fragrance-free, and VOC-free. This is not a preference — it is the only product category appropriate for an environment where infants and toddlers breathe in direct proximity to cleaned surfaces for extended periods during every sleep session.
Products with fragrance compounds — including those marketed as "natural fragrance" or "essential oil-based" — off-gas aromatic VOCs in the enclosed airspace of a sleep room. Products with synthetic VOC carriers behave similarly. The absence of a strong odour does not make a product VOC-free; only products with independently verified VOC-free formulations are acceptable. GECA certification provides this independent verification. A full product register is available on request for your ACECQA documentation file.
Products That Must Not Be Used in Childcare Sleep Rooms
The following product categories are unsuitable for use in childcare sleep rooms and are never used by Golden Star in any sleep or rest room cleaning service.
- Fragranced cleaning products — including lemon, pine, lavender, and essential oil formulations. Fragrance compounds are airway irritants and allergen triggers that persist in the enclosed airspace of sleep rooms.
- Bleach-based disinfectants — chlorine fumes at post-clean concentrations are a direct respiratory irritant for infants in enclosed sleep environments.
- Ammonia-based cleaners — ammonia is a potent respiratory irritant that off-gasses in enclosed rooms and is completely unacceptable in any childcare sleep environment.
- Petrochemical-based floor cleaners — these leave VOC residues on floor surfaces where infants sleep and are inconsistent with NQS Quality Area 2 product standards.
Sleep & Rest Room Cleaning Frequency Requirements
NHMRC Childcare Cleaning Guidelines and NQS Quality Area 3 require three tiers of cleaning frequency for childcare sleep and rest rooms. The after-every-session cleaning must address all surfaces infants and toddlers contact during sleep. Weekly cleaning covers ventilation, high ledges, and less frequent items. Term break deep cleans address all non-routine areas and produce ACECQA documentation.

NQS Quality Area 2 & 3 — Sleep Room Compliance
NQS Quality Area 2 — Children's Health and Safety — applies to sleep and rest rooms, which are among the areas ACECQA assessors examine most closely during quality assessment visits. Under Quality Area 2, assessors will look for documentation of systematic sleep room cleaning, evidence of appropriate product use, and records of cot and bedding hygiene practices. A centre that cannot produce sleep room cleaning records, or that is found to be using fragranced or chemical products in infant sleep environments, may receive an inadequate outcome against Quality Area 2.
NQS Quality Area 3 — Physical Environment — additionally requires that the physical environment is well-maintained and that ventilation is adequate in all areas children occupy. Sleep rooms require particular attention to ventilation maintenance because enclosed sleep environments with poor ventilation amplify any chemical residue or airborne contaminants from cleaning products. Golden Star's sleep room cleaning protocol includes a ventilation check as a standard task at every visit.
All staff entering sleep rooms hold current Victorian Working With Children Checks and national police clearances under the Working with Children Act 2005 (Vic). View all childcare cleaning services or see pricing.
